Gen Z is Turning in Keyboards for Toolbelts: What this means for future employment

If you’re not already following The AI Workplace Wellness Substack, you should be, because you’re missing out.

In the latest issue, Paul Chaney highlights a trend every employer should be paying attention to: Gen Z is trading in their keyboards and corporate dreams for toolbelts and trades.

Here are the key takeaways from Chaney’s post:

  1. Three out of five Gen Z adults plan to pursue blue-collar work in 2026.

  2. Eighty percent of them cite “AI-proofing” their future as the reason.

  3. Many also say “making something real” resonates after years of screen-based school and work hype.

My take: This isn’t a retreat from progress. It’s a reminder that meaningful work remains one of the most powerful drivers of human-centered organizations. The next generation is telling us they want work that feels meaningful, embodied, and connected to their communities.

And it’s time for small businesses and nonprofits to take advantage of this momentum.

Here are a few ways HR can help organizations attract and retain skilled, essential, and in-person workers — from trades to healthcare to childcare:

  1. Purpose beats perks. A clear mission, visible impact, and strong mentorship or apprenticeship programs attract younger talent more effectively than trendy tech ever could.

  2. Total rewards still matter. If wages can’t match major trade companies or entry-level corporate jobs, invest in growth: offer paid certifications, predictable schedules, and cross-training.

  3. Recruit differently (or maybe just old-school). Revisit hiring halls, partner with high schools and vocational programs, and show candidates the long-term stability and human connection your organization already offers.

If Gen Z is redefining what meaningful work looks like, how will your organization respond? Are you ready to meet them halfway?

Helping organizations build total rewards programs, career ladders, and authentic cultural frameworks that keep people and purpose at the center is exactly the kind of work I do.
